Green Woodpecker Picus viridus

Broughton Trout Pools, Nr Aylesbury, Bucks - January 2008

This Green Woodpecker is one of a pair usually present in the area.  The bird is a male, this being indicated by the red patch below the eye.  In a female this would be black.

Green Woodpeckers are a common species throughout the county wherever there is suitable habitat.  They like open grassy areas to feed open and will often visit larger gardens, although they are a shy bird and easily disturbed.
